I consider it my Mona Lisa!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the speech I gave (watch the video below), a couple of people approached me to say how excited they were to hear the story behind that piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F2jiYq_-U5s?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=pt-BR&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, people may perceive this painting as a bit aggressive. I would say that is not totally wrong; however, the true meaning behind it has more to do with freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See, I am a feminist and it took me years before I could realize what that really means. Most of my friends were boys, and I have always considered myself a tomboy, 0% girly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I grew older, I learned to understand the true value of sisterhood. I was blessed to have some extremely supportive women come into my life when I needed it most, and I understood I was actually sexist myself until that point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a feminist has to do with believing that all genders deserve the same rights. It has to do with equality. I should not have to raise my voice to be heard, and I should not have to work twice as hard to receive the same payment or recognition a man gets with half the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back to the story behind this piece\u2026 I moved to Charleston 3 years ago, from S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil. After a year, I got representation from a gallery and had been mainly painting landscapes trying to fit in and make a living. At a certain point, I decided to work on some figurative pieces (I have always loved painting people), and I went for a nude, posted on social media, and to my surprise, I was told it was a big NO-NO here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, I live in a highly conservative area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, my blood was boiling, and this image came to my mind, so I immediately went on to work on a sketch and soon came up with this final piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I posted it on Facebook and Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While I lost many followers, I also had the best interaction ever with a post. People were commenting, loving the attitude, wanting to know more about it, and even suggesting it should be the image of a feminist movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After some requests, I made some merchandise, and to my surprise, I started getting orders from absolute strangers. This week I even had an order from the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No need to say, the repercussion gave me a boost, and I started a new series called &#8220;Like A Girl: Dare To Dream.&#8221; I am currently working on portraits of strong and inspiring women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They won&#8217;t shut me up. My art is my voice, and I intend to use it for the greater good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Join the movement! Get your Tee, send a notecard, and hang a poster at your office.
